Ubuntu Hair Studio, located in Solana Beach, California, is a top quality salon that combines global activism with personal health and beauty. Named after the African concept of “Ubuntu,” the salon strives to be a vehicle for human compassion, propelled by the idea that humanity binds individual beings together into one unified whole. Ubuntu Hair Studio is composed of a team of professionals working to uplift not only their clients, but fellow small business owners, local community members, and those in need around the world.

Ubuntu Hair Studio recognizes that even the smallest of efforts within its salon can translate into big contributions to a variety of initiatives. Through the Studio’s participation in a program from Matter of Trust, Inc., client hair clippings are transformed into booms and mats used to clean up havoc wreaked by oil spills. As a matter of policy, the professionals at the Studio do not accept personal gratuities. Instead, they donate all tips to one of several charities supported by the salon. The Studio has also participated in multiple local and national initiatives, including collecting hair to be used in wigs for cancer patients and hosting a doll decorating event benefitting children in Mexico and Southern California. Dolls from the latter event were donated to children in Uganda.

The global consciousness espoused by the salon even extends to the products it chooses to offer. With the sale of certain items, partner companies donate to Hawaiian Rainforest Conservation Fund or provide mosquito nets to a child or a pregnant woman in Kenya. The Studio also offers gifts handcrafted by women from recycled elements and acquired through fair trade.

Prior to opening Ubuntu Hair Studio, owner Dawn Ellinwood worked as a senior colorist at world-renowned Frederic Fekkai Salon and Spa. While honing her expertise, Ms. Ellinwood provided services to several top celebrities, including Penelope Cruz and Heidi Klum. Ubuntu Hair Studio recently appeared on the television show America’s Next Top Model. For more information about the salon, please visit UbuntuHairStudio.com.
